The Goodness of God

The goodness of God describes His inherent kindness and benevolence, the source from which every genuinely good thing in creation ultimately flows.

Psalm 34:8 invites direct, experiential confirmation of this: "O taste and see that the LORD is good." Goodness here is not merely a doctrine to affirm intellectually but a reality meant to be personally experienced.

The exodus narrative repeatedly frames God's goodness in concrete provision, manna in the wilderness, water from a rock, protection from pursuing enemies. Israel's goodness is not abstract theology but lived experience of a God who provides for real, physical need.

James 1:17 traces every good gift back to a single source: "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning." God's goodness does not fluctuate or have a hidden dark side.

The story of Joseph again offers a picture of goodness working through hardship, not around it. His years of unjust suffering in Egypt are not undone or erased, but God's goodness is shown in bringing genuine good out of genuinely painful circumstances, without minimizing the real harm done to him.

In practice, believing in God's goodness shapes how people interpret difficult seasons, not by insisting every hardship is secretly pleasant, but by trusting that God's character remains kind even when circumstances are genuinely hard.

Psalm 100:5 ties goodness to permanence: "the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations." This is not a temporary or situational goodness.

A common misconception equates God's goodness with the absence of hardship, assuming a good God would prevent all suffering. Scripture instead consistently affirms God's goodness while also depicting real suffering, treating the two as compatible rather than contradictory.

Nahum 1:7, written amid warnings of coming judgment, still affirms, "The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him." Goodness and judgment are held together, not treated as contradictions.
