Mount Ararat

Mount Ararat refers to a mountainous region in eastern Anatolia, in what is now eastern Turkey, traditionally associated with the towering peak that bears the name today. Scripture itself speaks of "the mountains of Ararat" as a range rather than naming a single specific peak, though the region has long carried deep symbolic weight as the place where the earth began again after the flood.

Genesis 8:4 records the pivotal moment: "And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat." This marks the point at which the flood waters had receded enough for the ark to come to rest, setting the stage for Noah and his family to eventually step onto dry ground once again.

The name Ararat also appears in connection with the ancient kingdom of the same name, referenced in the historical books. 2 Kings 19:37 records that after King Sennacherib of Assyria was assassinated by his own sons, "they escaped into the land of Armenia," a region closely associated with the ancient territory of Ararat, showing the name carried real geopolitical meaning beyond the flood narrative alone.

Jeremiah 51:27 likewise names Ararat among the kingdoms summoned against Babylon: "call together against her the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashchenaz," confirming that Ararat was understood in Scripture as a genuine, identifiable region and political entity, not merely a mythic backdrop for the flood account.

Mount Ararat is mentioned by name only a handful of times in Scripture, but each mention carries real historical and theological weight -- as the resting place of the ark, as a genuine kingdom summoned in prophecy, and as a place of real geopolitical consequence in the ancient Near East. The regions historically associated with Ararat correspond to areas of real significance throughout the ancient Near East, situated at a genuine crossroads between Mesopotamian, Anatolian, and Caucasian civilizations.
