Moses

Moses is one of the most significant figures in the entire Old Testament, the deliverer who led Israel out of Egyptian slavery, the mediator through whom God gave the law at Sinai, and the leader who guided the nation through forty years of wilderness wandering toward the promised land.

Moses' early life includes remarkable providence, hidden as an infant to escape Pharaoh's decree against Hebrew baby boys, then raised in Pharaoh's own household after being discovered by Pharaoh's daughter, before fleeing to Midian as a young man after killing an Egyptian he saw beating a Hebrew slave.

Exodus 3:14 records God's dramatic call to Moses at the burning bush, decades later while tending sheep in Midian, revealing His own name, "I AM THAT I AM," and commissioning Moses to return to Egypt and demand Pharaoh release the Israelites.

Moses repeatedly confronts Pharaoh, each refusal met with escalating plagues, culminating in the Passover and Israel's dramatic deliverance through the parted waters of the Red Sea, with Pharaoh's pursuing army destroyed as the waters return.

At Mount Sinai, Moses receives the Ten Commandments and the broader law that would structure Israel's covenant relationship with God, descending to find the people already worshipping a golden calf in his absence, a betrayal that provokes his anger yet does not end his intercession on their behalf.

Moses is described in Numbers as "very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth," a striking description for someone who confronted Pharaoh directly and led an entire, often difficult nation for decades, suggesting his humility was compatible with genuine strength and authority.

Moses' own disobedience, striking a rock in anger at Meribah rather than speaking to it as instructed, results in a severe personal consequence, he is barred from entering the promised land himself, viewing it only from a distance before his death.

Deuteronomy 34:10 closes the Pentateuch noting that "there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face," and the New Testament later presents Jesus as the greater prophet Moses himself had promised would eventually come.
