Priscilla and Aquila

Priscilla and Aquila were a married couple, tentmakers by trade, who became significant early church leaders and teachers, notable for the consistent partnership reflected throughout their appearances in the New Testament and for their careful, gracious correction of a gifted but incompletely informed teacher.

The couple first appears in Acts after being expelled from Rome along with other Jews under an imperial decree, settling in Corinth, where Paul meets them and, sharing their trade as a tentmaker himself, stays and works alongside them.

Priscilla and Aquila travel with Paul to Ephesus and remain there when he continues his journey, establishing themselves as a resource for the growing church in that city, hosting a congregation that met in their own home according to Paul's later greetings.

Acts 18:26 records their most notable individual act, hearing Apollos, an eloquent and knowledgeable teacher, preaching accurately but incompletely in the synagogue. Rather than publicly correcting him, they take him aside privately and explain "the way of God more perfectly."

This gracious, private approach to correction, rather than public confrontation, has been noted throughout church history as a model for how to address a genuinely gifted teacher's incomplete understanding without shaming or undermining their broader, valuable ministry.

Priscilla is named before her husband in several of these New Testament references, an unusual ordering for the period that has led many readers to conclude she held particular teaching gift or prominence within their shared ministry, though the couple is consistently presented working together.

Paul refers to them in his letter to the Romans as his "helpers in Christ Jesus," noting that they had risked their own lives for his, a debt of gratitude he says was shared by all the Gentile churches, suggesting their support of Paul's ministry extended well beyond hospitality alone.

The couple's consistent partnership across multiple cities and years of ministry offers a lasting picture of shared, collaborative service within marriage, and their careful handling of Apollos remains a specific, practical model for gracious, private correction within the church.
