Hannah

Hannah was an Israelite woman whose years of grief over infertility, and the specific vow she made in her deepest distress, led to the birth of Samuel, one of Israel's most significant prophets and judges.

1 Samuel 1:6 describes her ongoing anguish: her husband Elkanah's other wife, who had children, provoked her repeatedly over her barrenness, deepening a grief already difficult on its own.

During a family visit to the tabernacle at Shiloh, Hannah prays with such visible intensity, weeping and moving her lips without audible sound, that the priest Eli initially assumes she is drunk and rebukes her. She corrects him, explaining she has been "pouring out my soul before the LORD" (1 Samuel 1:15) out of genuine grief, not intoxication.

Her prayer includes a specific vow: if given a son, she will dedicate him to the LORD's service for the whole of his life. This is not a private hope alone; it is a binding commitment made in the moment of her prayer.

When Samuel is born and eventually weaned, likely around age three, Hannah follows through on her vow completely, bringing him to Eli at Shiloh to be raised in the tabernacle's service, visiting him only once a year afterward with a new coat she made him.

1 Samuel 2:1-10 records Hannah's prayer of praise following this, a song celebrating God's reversal of fortunes for the weak and lowly, language and themes that closely echo Mary's later Magnificat in Luke's Gospel.

Hannah's willingness to follow through on her vow, giving up the very child she had prayed so desperately for, distinguishes her story from a simple prayer-answered narrative; it shows costly obedience continuing well past the initial answer to prayer.

Scripture notes that God continued to bless Hannah with additional children afterward, but her defining legacy remains the son she gave back to God's service, whose leadership as prophet and judge shapes the transition from Israel's judges into its era of kings.
