Jonathan

Jonathan was the eldest son of King Saul and heir to Israel's throne, whose deep loyalty to his friend David, the very man who would take that throne instead of him, stands as one of Scripture's clearest pictures of selfless friendship.

Before his friendship with David begins, Jonathan is already established as a courageous military leader, initiating a bold, unauthorized attack on a Philistine garrison with only his armor-bearer, trusting that "there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few" (1 Samuel 14:6).

After David's victory over Goliath, Jonathan's friendship with him forms immediately and deeply. 1 Samuel 18:1 describes his soul becoming "knit with the soul of David," and he loved him "as his own soul," a bond formed despite Jonathan's own position as heir to the throne David was clearly being prepared to inherit instead.

Jonathan demonstrates this loyalty concretely, giving David his own robe, armor, sword, and bow, gestures that symbolically transfer status and support to David rather than guarding them jealously for himself.

As Saul's jealousy toward David intensifies into repeated attempts on his life, Jonathan repeatedly intervenes, first persuading his father to spare David, and later, when reconciliation proves impossible, secretly warning David and helping him escape, choosing his friend's safety over his father's wishes.

1 Samuel 23:17 records a striking moment during David's fugitive years: Jonathan visits him in hiding and openly acknowledges, "thou shalt be king over Israel, and I shall be next unto thee," a direct admission that David, not Jonathan himself, would ultimately reign.

Jonathan dies alongside his father in battle against the Philistines on Mount Gilboa, a loss David mourns with a formal lament, famously declaring that Jonathan's love to him was "wonderful, passing the love of women" (2 Samuel 1:26).

After becoming king, David specifically seeks out and cares for Jonathan's surviving son Mephibosheth, restoring his family's land and giving him a permanent place at the king's own table, a tangible continuation of the loyalty Jonathan had shown him decades earlier.
